Spring Foundation aims to revive the spirit of the Ummah and bring back its glories. Historically the ummah of Islam was an Ummah of knowledge, expertise and progress. Our great ancestors were able to reach great heights due their devotion to Allah and their desire to know more. The lack of knowledge and understanding has been described by the Messenger of Allah (saw) as an ailment:
“...Do you not ask if do not know?? Ignorance is an ailment and its cure is to ask...” (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Al-Daraqutni)
The most important factor that led to the decline of the ummah was the Muslims’ lack of devotion to Islam as well as their ignorance and backwardness. Therefore it is our passion to rekindle the light of faith and knowledge in the Ummah by enabling our young generation to go forth and seek knowledge that will help them to revive and rebuild the Ummah.
Spring Foundation also seeks to promote a balanced and contextual understanding of Islam which we believe is from the methodology of our great ancestors. Unfortunately there are too many of those who have memorised a great deal of information in a parrot fashion however there are very few that have acquired a true, balanced and contextual understanding of Islam. Many people have failed to realise that knowledge is more than mere memorisation of information. The fact that knowledge is more than just gathering information was well understood by our great ancestors. For example Imam Malik is reported to have said:
"Knowledge does not consist in narrating much. Knowledge is but a light which Allah places in the heart." (Reported in Jami’ Bayan al-‘Ilm of Ibn Abdil Barr)
Furthermore the Messenger of Allah (saw) also said:
"The judges are three; one of the judges is in Paradise and two are in the Fire. With regards to the one in Paradise then he is the man who knew the truth and judged according to it. The man who knew the truth and was unjust in his ruling is in the Fire, and the man who judged between the people out of ignorance is in the Fire." (Abu Dawud)
Thus it is our hope that our students will learn the knowledge and learn how to apply it to themselves and to their practical environment in a balanced and contextual manner.
