Sadaqa

Sadaqa is an Arabic word meaning "righteousness" which is derived from the word "to be truthful." Sadaqa or giving charity is a manifestation of one’s faith and iman.

The importance of charity is mentioned many times in the Holy Qur’an. One such verse is:

"Give to the near of kin his due, and also to the needy and the wayfarers. Do not squander your wealth wastefully; for those who squander wastefully are Satan's brothers, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord." (17:26-27)

Other verses in the Qur'an are more stern, and warn of a punishment if Muslims don't share their wealth:

"Allah does not love the ones who are stingy, exhort the people to be stingy, and conceal what Allah has bestowed upon them from His bounties. We have prepared for the disbelievers a shameful retribution. They give money to charity only to show off, while disbelieving in Allah and the Last Day. If one's companion is the devil, that is the worst companion. Why do they not believe in Allah and the Last Day, and give from Allah's provisions to them? Allah is fully aware of them." (Qur'an 4:36-39)

There are abundant Ahadith of the Prophet exhorting us to give sadaqa. He taught us that giving charity does not diminish ones wealth but increases it. The Prophet said: "Wealth is not diminished by giving (in charity)’’ (Muslim)

According to the teachings of Islam the giving of sadaqa serves a number of functions:

Sadaqa first and foremost act as expiation for sins. The believers are asked to give sadaqa immediately following any transgression (Ihya Ulumuddin, Al-Ghazzali, 1/298).

Sadaqa can also compensate for any shortcoming in the past payment of Zakah, Sadaqa also gives protection against all kinds of evil.

Sadaqa wards off affliction in this world, questioning in the grave and punishment on Judgment Day. (Tafsir Ruh-alBayan, 1/418).

It is therefore recommended to give sadaqa by night and by day, in secret and in public to seek God's pleasure (Quran, 2:274). The constant giving of a little is said to please God more than the occasional giving of much. Sadaqa is also a means of moral edification.
